It was love at first sight – the moment that we walked through the field of wildflowers in the waist high grass that lead up to the little two storey cabin, we knew that we had found our home – even though we didn’t even have a boat to get there yet!
That was 2005… and since then we have been pouring our hearts and souls into our property, turning it into the spacious and inviting Lodge that it is today!
We have said time and time again that Renata is our labor of love, and we are proud to be able to share the fruits of our labors with you! At the heart of all we do, we strive for simplicity in life, enjoyable and soulful work, intellectual and creative pursuits and meaningful interactions with people like you! We hope that your time spent in Renata will be as magical and as unforgettable for you as it is for us.
Ari is originally from the Toronto area and first came to BC in the early 90’s to ski in the powder drenched mountains of the Southern Interior. In the summer months he worked in construction, and through a love and appreciation of nature and the environment became involved the Natural Building movement. For 7 years he traveled the globe helping in the construction of more than 25 Straw Bale homes in Canada, the US and Australia. His passion for building shows in all aspects of the Lodge, which he designed and built around the original cabin.
In the winter months his pursuit of deep powder snow led him away from the ski hills of the Kootenays into the backcountry in BC and abroad, and eventually into a 10 year long winter career as a professional cat and heli ski guide. Due to finding a new Adrenalin addiction Ari has retired from ski guiding and now enjoys the thrill of kiteboarding in Renata, Hood River or the warm southern waters of Mexico when he can!
Shari is originally from Alberta and while growing up spent time living in Edmonton, Lethbridge and Calgary. With fond memories of vacationing in the Shuswap, water skiing and enjoying the amazing summer heat, she always knew she would end up living in BC. When an opportunity arose to complete her teaching degree in Castlegar BC, she took it… that was ten years ago.
With a background in Fine Arts, Shari spends her winters creating sculptural and functional ceramics and using natural and man made media to produce interesting collage pieces. She is also a practicing teacher in the Kootenays, and a learning consultant for SelfDesign. When the summer rolls around, she is more than happy to switch gears, get into the dirt and express her creativity in the gardens and on canvas.
Tyra came to us when she was 7 months old from a shelter in Nelson. She is a black Lab and Sheppard mix, and is a very intelligent and rambunctious dog, full of energy and zest for life. She loves to play, so if you are bringing your pet, please expect a serious workout for him or her! She is also an amazing cuddler once she has tired herself out for the day.
